“After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9
Dear Beloved Community,
Lent is one of my favorite times of the year. It is a time of reflection, of soul-searching and taking stock of our lives. This year our Lenten Season has been inspired by our Courageous Love Initiative, calling us to discover a deeper understanding of who God is through a better understanding of God’s diverse creation.
Imagine how boring the world would be if we were all the same? Our lives wouldn’t just be bland without variety; they’d also be impossible. Just as the body consists of various parts all working together to achieve different things, we Christians of various races, cultures and backgrounds need to unite to achieve the tasks that God has set out for us.
With wisdom beyond our comprehension and intentionality God created His children to be diverse. And just as any loving parent, God wants us to unite. That’s why God gave us different skills and strengths so that we would recognize our need for one another and appreciate our individuality. God’s love for variety is not just visible in us but in all aspects of God’s creation. Just look at the many species in any ecosystem all living in synchrony, or the changing seasons, each allowing for growth.
In our world, our differences are often used as a means to create distance between us. But God intends for His people to come together in love.
Love calls us outside of ourselves, outside of our preferences and outside of our comfort zone. Love throws us into uncharted territories and down roads that are often unfamiliar and scary. And love calls us to do one of the hardest things imaginable; it calls us to surrender. Surrendering to the mystery of God found in God’s diversity. Let us trust that God is on this 40-day journey with us as we faithfully live our lives together as Christ’s diverse, yet unified body.
For the next 40 days of Lent I am challenging us to be intentional about getting to know Christ’s diverse body by spending time with our sisters and brothers at RENEW Church and Immigrant Solidarity DuPage. It is only through understanding the wholeness of God’s creation that we ourselves become whole.
